These hair clips are no larger than a pumpkin seed, yet they feel like a heartbeat against the palm when you hold them. When I started elementary school in Italy, I was the “only foreign student” in my class – the one who looked different and sometimes acted differently due to cultural differences. But it was only when a group of girls approached me, offering not a book or a drawing, but these tiny hair clips, that something shifted. It was an invitation, a hand extended in friendship, after which I never felt left out again. Surprisingly, they left such a deep impression that the hair clips survived the chaotic depths of different backpacks, the frantic packing of several apartment moves, and the relentless shuffling of heavy luggage. For me, it felt statistically impossible that something so small could remain. Now, whenever I reach into the bottom of my jewelry box, my fingers still graze that familiar ridged plastic. It is as if the clips have always refused to be lost, anchoring me to the day I was first welcomed into a land that was not my own. To a stranger, they might look like forgotten clutter destined for the vacuum cleaner, but to me they are among the “heaviest” things I own – carrying the weight of unconditional kindness and the warmth of friendship.
